About Epping Forest
Epping Forest is a region of historic woodland and other established habitats located on the Greater London-Essex boundary. The forest’s main body spans from Epping in the north to Chingford, on the outskirts of London’s built-up area. South of Chingford, the forest narrows and forms a green corridor that stretches all the way to Forest Gate in East London.
Epping Forest was once a royal forest (owned by the King) but is now owned and managed by The City of London Corporation.
In 1543, Henry VIII commissioned ‘Great Standing’, a structure from which he could observe the chase at Chingford. The structure was refurbished for Queen Elizabeth I in 1589. It has been renamed Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge and is now open to the public. Near the Hunting Lodge can be found a cafe called Butler’s Retreat. A good starting point for your walk through Epping Forest.
